Kryptos takes Chester by storm

On only his second run for this stable, Kryptos is now a winner after flying home to salute at Chester on Saturday, having made an impressive debut in Britain last month when third in a Newmarket maiden.

Bought last October at the Tattersalls horses-in-training sale for Tony Fordham, the Juddmonte-bred full-brother to G1 Prix Jean Prat winner Mutual Trust had made just two starts for Dermot Weld towards the end of last season and looked just the type who should improve with age and experience.

Having been gelded and given a break over the winter, Kryptos's year didn't start in ideal fashion as he suffered a twisted gut while rolling post-exercise one morning in February and had to have emergency surgery to correct what is an extremely painful condition which can be fatal.

Happily he bounced back from this frightening situation and, as his work was increased through the spring, the lovely long-striding gelding started to show John that he possesses a decent amount of ability. It's great to have a win on the board so early in his time with us, especially as Tony, his wife Rebecca and children Archie amd Miranda have been longstanding supporters of this stable and were all at Chester to enjoy his big day.

The one major scare aside, Kryptos is a pleasure to have in the yard. He's a kind, straightforward horse who appears to enjoy his daily exercise. His regular parter Ivona Slachtova is a really good rider and we're very grateful to her for all the hard work she puts into this horse and others in the yard.

We're grateful, too, to surgeon Dr Mark Hillyer and his fellow Newmarket Equine Hospital vets Stuart Williamson and Rob Suffern who attended to Kryptos back in February and made the difference between him living and dying. It's not the first time we've been enormously relieved to live so close to the best equine hospital in the country.

Last word must go to Nicola Currie, who is apprenticed to Richard Hughes and is a name to follow. She's a lovely rider who did a great job of settling the feisty Roy Rocket on a previous ride for John. We were delighted to give Nicola just the third win of her career aboard Kryptos on her first ride of Chester, and she will be on board Kilim for us tomorrow at Windsor.
